Mumbai: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has arrested builder Abhishek Vyas, who had been absconding for the past eight years. Vyas was wanted in connection with six alleged multi-crore fraud cases linked to his company, A & A Shelters, and had been evading both the police and the court for several years.
According to the police, six criminal cases were registered against Abhishek Vyas and other accused persons with the EOW during 2015 and 2016. The cases were filed under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant or agent), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property), 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention). The accused were also booked under Sections 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, and 14 of the Maharashtra Ownership Flats (Regulation of the Promotion of Construction, Sale, Management and Transfer) Act (MOFA).
Following the completion of the investigation, the EOW filed charge sheets against Vyas and the other accused before the 47th Esplanade Court in Mumbai. However, since 2018, Vyas had repeatedly failed to appear before the court despite legal proceedings. As a result, the court issued a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) against him.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs and using technical surveillance, the EOW traced Vyas to the vicinity of the Taj Hotel in Santacruz. A police team laid a trap and successfully apprehended him.
The accused has been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
