Mumbai: The eagerly awaited Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) Extension project is nearing completion, with just a critical 100-meter suspension span remaining. According to officials, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is only awaiting traffic clearance for two scheduled blocks to install the final segment of this cable-stayed bridge.
Engineers will proceed with phased installation of the suspension cables, following the unique curvature of the bridge, to ensure its structural stability. Once the cables are in place, final road surfacing will complete the construction, allowing the SCLR extension to open to the public on January 1, 2025.
The 4.2-kilometer extension project, connecting Kapadia Nagar and Panbai International School, has faced various hurdles since construction began in 2016. Originally planned for completion in 2019, the project saw multiple delays due to challenges in land acquisition, including a critical stretch of defense land. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently authorized a payment of ₹16 crore to defense authorities, resolving one of the last major obstacles and enabling construction to move forward.
The extended route will enhance connectivity through vital junctions, including Vakola Junction, Ambedkar Chowk, University Junction, and the BKC Junction, promising much-needed relief for commuters between Kurla and Vakola. Once operational, the new link is expected to ease congestion along these busy corridors and improve traffic flow across Mumbai’s dense metropolitan areas.
With the installation of the final segment imminent, Mumbai’s infrastructure push takes a step closer to its vision of a seamlessly connected city.
